Book Blurb:

When Helene was young, she dreamed of the perfect man and filled her notebooks with stories about him and about love in its purest form. But after a messy divorce, she has let go of such naive fantasies. She has moved to a small town in Alaska, where she is ready to write her novel and build a new life without romance. Fate has other plans, though. Helene soon meets Sebastien Montague, a handsome fisherman who is her invented hero made flesh, down to the most idiosyncratic details. But how can a man she created possibly exist in the real world? While Helene tries to discover the truth behind his existence, Sebastien is determined to keep that truth from her, for he is a man scarred by serial tragedy, hiding a secret that has broken his heart time and again. Yet the shadows of the past emerge, endangering Helene and Sebastien’s future before it even begins–and it becomes clear that it won’t be easy to forge a new ending to the greatest love story of all time.

The Hundred Loves of Juliet by Evelyn Skye is a cute and inventive way to carry on the story of Romeo and Juliet in current day. Since my visit to Verona, Italy in 2016, I definitely have a soft spot for the Capulets and the Montagues.

This story wraps itself around the premise of Romeo never dying, and Juliet being reincarnated time and time again. Each time she finds Romeo (Sebastian) in a different city, state or country, she has no idea who he is, and they live in their blissful romance until she passes. The twist is that this Juliet (Helene), recognizes Sebastian as the man she’s been dreaming about forever.

The book carries on with good banter, falling for each other at great risk, and of course, life in Alaska. Overall, the story was good, but I wish there was a better explanation of the curse that caused Romeo to live forever. I enjoyed the narration and was completely engaged in the story but with the lack of understanding about the curse and the rushed ending, I got a bit frustrated.

If you’re a fan of Romeo and Juliet and divine connections that are otherworldly, for example the stories she wrote are of Romeo’s actual relationships, then you’ll be quite happy with this story!

Quotes I liked:

Perhaps a life well lived isn’t measured in months or years, but in love. In kisses and gentle twining of hands, in fiery embraces and soft, whispered affections.”
