Book Blurb:

A Place for Usย unfolds the lives of an Indian-American Muslim family, gathered together in their Californian hometown to celebrate the eldest daughter, Hadia’s, wedding – a match of love rather than tradition. It is here, on this momentous day, that Amar, the youngest of the siblings, reunites with his family for the first time in three years. Rafiq and Layla must now contend with the choices and betrayals that lead to their son’s estrangement – the reckoning of parents who strove to pass on their cultures and traditions to their children; and of children who in turn struggle to balance authenticity in themselves with loyalty to the home they came from.

A Place For Us, the first imprint from Sarah Jessica Parker for Hogarth Publishing, was a finely balanced story of family, tradition and love. Thereโ€™s no great action or defining climax to the story. Instead, itโ€™s a slow burn told from many characterโ€™s perspectives, offering vignettes of life inside of this family.

Being good enough, honoring thy father, Islamaphobia, living post September 11th as a Muslim American, wanting a love marriage instead of an arranged one, questioning the disconnection from religion, unrequited love, keeping secrets from those you love most, protecting your heritage and living up to the expectations of society both socially and economically were all thoughtfully considered.

The lucid and lyrical writing sucks you right into this story. An unexpected ending will leave you thinking about these characters for days. I look forward to whatโ€™s next for this fabulous debut novel.

Quotes I liked:

If ever they could resume, even just for an afternoon. If ever she called. A sin was not a sin, if it were for her. A risk was not a risk.โ€

-โ€œAnd remember that anytime you point your finger to accuse someone, there are three fingers beneath it, curled to point right back at you.โ€

-โ€œโ€œAre you happy,” he asked.
“I am,” she said. And then she twisted again the row of bangles on her wrist. “I’m content. My parents are happy.โ€
