The Floating Feldmans by Elyssa Friedland
Book Blurb:
Between the troublesome family secrets, old sibling rivalries, and her two teenage grandkids, Annette’s birthday vacation is looking more and more like the perfect storm. Adrift together on the open seas, the Feldmans will each face the truths they’ve been ignoring–and learn that the people they once thought most likely to sink them are actually the ones who help them stay afloat.
My Review: 4 stars
The Floating Feldmans is a book that reminds you that every family has their own brand of dysfunction. There’s love for every family member but there’s always one or two that keep a stash of crazy up their sleeves. Friedland takes us on board the cruise that Annette, matriarch of the family, believes will somehow fix on the broken parts of her family. It’s her 70th birthday wish.
This book brings humorous fiction to the forefront of the novel. Yes, relationships are explored, misconstrued, broken and put back together, but there’s an underlying current of comedy that keeps all the tough issues afloat. Everything from first loves, addiction, secrets, financial issues, medical scares and estrangement are touched on.
I related quite well with the storyline as my in-laws have taken all the kids and grandkids on a cruise. The kids were much younger so the issues weren’t nearly as significant as the book. We dealt with crabby kids who didn’t nap and sunburn…but YES, we wore Happy Anniversary t-shirts, all fourteen of us.
This book will lift anyone’s spirits, make you laugh and engage you from start to finish.
Quotes I liked:
I mean we Feldmans aren’t the kind of people who were ridiculous matching clothing. With my picture, no less!
“I feel like I speak family as a second language.”
