Book Blurb:

Part memoir and part joyful romp through the fields of imagination, the story behind a beloved pseudonymous Twitter account reveals how a writer deep in grief rebuilt a life worth living.
Becoming Duchess Goldblatt is two stories: that of the reclusive real-life writer who created a fictional character out of loneliness and thin air, and that of the magical Duchess Goldblatt herself, a bright light in the darkness of social media. Fans around the world are drawn to Her Grace’s voice, her wit, her life-affirming love for all humanity, and the fun and friendship of the community that’s sprung up around her.

Becoming Duchess Goldblatt is the memoir of a made-up Twitter sensation who calls herself Duchess Goldblatt.

She is witty, satirical, thoughtful and honest in her remarks on every topic under the sun. I’m a very inconsistent user of Twitter and came across her name on a post from the celebrated author Celeste Ng. I began to follow Goldblatt and was shocked at her loyal following. Not so much the number of followers she had, but instead the ardent followers who call her, “Your Grace.”

I really enjoyed the background story of why this woman adopted a nom de plume and it did seem as if she too, was amazed at her own popularity. As much as I enjoyed her story and commentary, however, I suppose I had unrealistic expectations that she’d go deeper about her own real life, not the fictional one. I can’t imagine living such a public double life. I found her anecdotes about fangirling over Lyle Lovett extremely enjoyable.

It seems as though she is a balm for the lonely, a spark of humor for many and something people can regularly depend on.

Quotes I liked:

It’s always the case that when you tell a secret to half a couple, you’ve told them both.”

“What do we gain by measuring my grief against yours?”

“Choices are a luxury. We forget that sometimes, don’t we? Not everybody gets to have choices.”

“When people say they’re going to make time for you, it’s instant time from a mix. No one bothers making new time from scratch anymore.”
