Fifty Shades Of Grey by E.L. James- 528 pages
Book Blurb:
When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.
Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires. Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.
My Review: 2.5 stars
I’ll break it down now: After the first sex scene, the “f%^king” was so constant and so lacking emotion that I was getting bored. Admittedly, I’m not an highly experienced erotic fiction reader, but I have read a handful of them and each one had much better, hotter and needier sex scenes from both parties involved. Next, Ana’s innocence was beyond irritating. I find it highly unlikely that a college graduate at 22 years old is so completely virginal that she’s never seen a man’s privates, never touched herself and is so clueless about sex! Yet she listens to inner goddess religiously.
Finally, no girl from Georgia or Washington says she’s taking a “rucksack” instead of a carry-on bag and they certainly don’t say “fetch” in terms a grabbing a glass of water.
I ended up giving it 2.5 stars because I did have the desire to finish it to see if Ana survives her trips to the Red Room of Pain, however I’m not sure I’m continuing on to read the 2nd and 3rd installments. I’m also glad that it got so many women and men reading and perhaps doing some other extra cirriculars together!!!
I am not a reading snob and I can appreciate many types of books. Even a poorly written book can have a great story at its heart. This just didn’t meet up to all the hype it’s been getting and the best part of this book in my humblest opinion is the quote I noted below.
Quotes I liked:
I’m fifty shades of fucked up.”
If Judy Moody’s author wrote an erotic novel, this would be it. Take a look at a Penthouse forum and get your hots that way, and save the reading for a book that isn’t written at a fifth grade level. For those of you who’ve read the book, “Holy S*$” now my inner goddess is cheering.
I prefer to think of this series as Danielle Steel gone bad 🙂 Books 2 and 3 are less dark and more suspenseful. Overall, I enjoyed the books and recommend the triology. Get past the first book and things improve.
Well now I feel a little better about being one of the few left who hasn’t read this book yet!
Havent read it yet, but now Im happy to cross it off my MUST read list—so many other great stories that are waiting and I TOTALLY TRUST YOU!!!!
I disagree. After spending a season reading required books for “book club”, it was fun and, yes, even erotic to just delve into different.

I couldn’t agree more. I actually wanted to ask for my money back and wish the few hours of my time that I will never get back.
That is funny!!!! Wouldn’t it be nice to get re-takes with our time!
A relaxing and entertaining read!
So glad you enjoyed it! That’s the whole point of reading!!!
I loved it! It was entertaining and fun to read. It was something new and out of my norm.
WELL GO GIRL! ME TOO! LADIES THIS IS A BEACH READ, AND THE BEST ONE I’VE HAD IN YEARS. THIS BOOK IS NOT TO BE MEANT AS A DEEP READ( NO PUN INTENDED.) IT WAS A DISFUNCTIONAL LOVE STORY. I LOVED EVERY BOOK, AND BANGED THEM OUT IN SIX DAYS. MY BOOKS HAVE BEEN ON THE MOVE THROUGH MY TOWN SINCE I FINISHED. I TOLD EVERYONE TO READ THESE, NO THINKING INVOLVED. AND MAYBE YOU PARTNER WILL GET LUCKY.LOL
I have to say – are not written well – but what great escapeism! I have read all three, intrigued more by the relationship than the kinky f@#$ery (of course that was the initial attraction to the book) – if you read the trilogy – you need to take it for what it is – comeplete fantasy.
I also picked up on the British terms that no American would use – “don’t get your knickers in a twist” ??? But I would blame the editor for those errors rather than the author.
We can pick a million holes in the book – but the fact remains that for me and countless others it is entertaining.
BTW – love the idea of your site – good luck with it!
Anonymous and Anonymous,
I’m thrilled you both liked it! I too blame some of the errors on the editor, not the author herself. And you’re entirely correct, this is major escapism and there is no better to read than that!
I appreciate your comments.
Happy reading,
L
