Book Blurb:
Almost Romance by Nancy Balbirer shows that finding love is all a matter of timing in a surprising, complicated, and funny memoir by the author of A Marriage in Dog Years. When a mysterious woman summons Nancy Balbirer to a Russian restaurant in New York City, the near stranger’s shocking purple hair and even more shocking news send Balbirer simultaneously reeling back to her past and hurtling toward a future that, at almost fifty years old, she never dreamed possible. This romantic-comedy memoir tells the true story of how a pack of Hollywood television writers and the denizens of a fabled but cursed Manhattan apartment building helped the author and one of her best friends turn a thirty-two-year almost romance into a real one.
My Review: 4 stars
Almost Romance by Nancy Balbirer is a one of a kind rom-com memoir that proves love can come at age or stage of life. Nancy tells her story with warmth and humor and even better, this is for sure a one sitting read. This book is a perfect escape from reality as the reader dives into the correspondences between Howard (Howie) Miller, producer and co-creator of the Netflix hit Frank and Gracie, and the author, Nancy Balbirer.
Balbirer met Howie at NYU in 1983 and called him the desk guy. There was an instant chemistry between them but it took three decades for it to come to fruition. They are the story that proves the adage: All good things come to those who wait. As you read their emails back and forth and get inside Balbirer’s head, it’s evident that her heart and her head were very much playing tug of war.
You will laugh and cringe at the stories they share about their dating experiences. Their vulnerabilities and naked truths were put on the page for the world to see. I applaud their candidness. Overall, you’ll laugh and cheer for this couple that was meant to be. Now go read the book and watch Grace and Frankie like I did. You’ll laugh over and over again!
