The Art Of Racing In The Rain by Garth Stein – 321 pages
Book Blurb:
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t simply about going fast. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through.

This book took me by surprise and never let go. Probably one of the first, in the ever-popular pet genre, this book played on the many similarities and differences between dog and man. I learned so much from this quirky, smart and lovable dog. The scene where the kid keeps throwing the chicken nuggets off his high chair and the mom is getting infuriated has stuck with for years. It’s only when the dog goes to gobble them up from the floor and realizes that they are horribly spoiled did I realize just how much dogs know about our behavior. If only the dog could’ve shared that information with the mom. Overall, a beautifully told story about life in general.
Quotes I liked:
There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose.”
-“People, like dogs, love repetition. Chasing a ball, lapping a course in a racecar, sliding down a slide. Because as much as each incident is similar, so it is different.”
