The Cuban Heiress by Chanel Cleeton was a great mystery and full of pretense as the two main protagonists presented themselves of women they were not. Being “stuck” on a ship from Cuba to Havana and back again gave much time for the thieves, gamblers, liars and pretenders to mingle.

I was happy to read a new book from this author. She has a knack for creating interesting and multi-faceted characters, while also making an  engaging storyline. Shockingly, my favorite character was the jewel thief, which is crazy because I was personally just robbed of all my jewelry. I liked his thick skin and his ability to own his career even though it’s wrong and illegal.

Learning is one reason I love historical fiction and this book educated me on the devastating fire that occurred in 1930. The portrayal of the rocky seas made me feel like I was there, but glad I wasn’t because I get really seasick.

This book had a smart ending that offers the opportunity to have it continue with a sequel or end as printed. For audio listeners, you won’t be disappointed. The narration was done with great skill and I loved the accents they had. Overall, this was a quick and easy read. Historical fiction light!
