The Midnight Train by Matt Haig was a beautiful story that moved along in a way that compliments the The Midnight Library. Haig’s books are filled with fantasy, magical realism, charm and even some moments of melancholy, yet at its heart, this is a book about life and where books can take us.
The main POV comes from Wilbur, a young man who falls in love with books at a young age and finds himself spending time in the local bookstore. Agnes, the woman who owns the bookstore, encourages him to read all different titles and helps him expand his world. He comes from a poor upbringing, yet he learns so much from his time in the store.
As his life goes on, we see how Wilbur becomes ravenous for money, greed and expansion after he buys Agnes’s bookstore. His wife Maggie keeps telling him to slow down, but she can’t compete with his desire for great wealth. So much happens in this story that I can’t share, yet later, he gains wisdom that he would never would’ve learned without getting on The Midnight Train.
