The Physick Book Of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe- 376 pages

Book Blurb:

Harvard graduate student Connie Goodwin needs to spend her summer doing research for her doctoral dissertation. But when her mother asks her to handle the sale of Connieโ€™s grandmotherโ€™s abandoned home near Salem, she canโ€™t refuse. As she is drawn deeper into the mysteries of the family house, Connie discovers an ancient key within a seventeenth-century Bible. The key contains a yellowing fragment of parchment with a name written upon it: Deliverance Dane. This discovery launches Connie on a questโ€”to find out who this woman was and to unearth a rare artifact of singular power: a physick book, its pages a secret repository for lost knowledge.
As the pieces of Deliveranceโ€™s harrowing story begin to fall into place, Connie is haunted by visions of the long-ago witch trials, and she begins to fear that she is more tied to Salemโ€™s dark past than she could have ever imagined.

My Review: 4 stars

I really liked this book. It offered a history of the Salem witch trials, a good mystery and a little current day romance. Put all of that into the cauldron and it was a winning read. The main character didnโ€™t seem like a Harvard grad student (or a grad student from any school) because she was entirely too clueless about so many common sense things unless it was spelled out in front of her. It didnโ€™t upset the overall story or feel of the book though; perhaps that what they call โ€œbooksmart.โ€

Quotes I liked:

Of course mothers and daughters with strong personalities might see the world from very different points of view.โ€

-โ€œ…You can have this whole entire life, with all your opinions, your loves, your fears. Eventually those parts of you disappear. And then the people who could remember those parts of you disappear, and before long, all that’s left is your name in some ledger. This…person — she had a favorite food. She had friends and people she disliked. We don’t even know how she died…I guess that’s why I like preservation better than history. In preservation I feel like I can keep some of it from slipping away.โ€
